COMMENTS:
"Rupert" is a five minute film created by a group of about 10 students at BYU. Once the story was finished, we divided it into four "worlds." I was "World Leader" of the "Battle World," a sequence in which five-year-old Rupert imagines that the germs that have made his mom sick are monsters. He imagines himself as "Super Rupert" and saves his mother.
For the battle sequence we wanted to create an "anime" look. To achieve a 2D cartoon effect, I created cel shaders for all of the characters. I modeled the main character and one of the monsters. I directed the modeling process of the other monsters and the environment. A few of the members of my team had never used 3D software before, so I was teaching them the technical aspects of PA at the same time as I was giving art direction.
Once the models and textures were finished we created the animation for the 40 shots that made up the battle sequence. I personally animated about 20 of the 40 shots and directed the animation of the others.
